Frequently asked questions

Common questions about getting help from UNHCR.

Do I need documentation to receive assistance?
No. We provide emergency assistance regardless of documentation status. Our registration teams can also help you obtain documentation if you don't already have it.
Is there a cost for any of your services?
All UNHCR services are free. If anyone asks you to pay for access to our programmes, please contact us immediately and report it.
What should I bring to a registration appointment?
Bring any identity documents you have, even if incomplete or expired. If you have none, our team can still help — just bring yourself and any family members needing registration.
Can I get help if I live outside a settlement or camp?
Yes. Many of our health and education services are open to host community members as well as refugees and displaced people. Contact your nearest UNHCR office to find out what's available in your area.
How quickly can emergency assistance reach me?
Our rapid response unit aims to reach a new displacement site within 72 hours of being notified. Contact your nearest office or use the form below to alert us.
How do I know if I am eligible for UNHCR assistance?
UNHCR assists refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced people, returnees and stateless people. If you are unsure of your status, contact us and our team will help determine how we can support you.
What can I do if I believe I have been a victim of fraud?
Report it immediately through our confidential reporting channels. UNHCR never charges for its services, and any request for payment in exchange for assistance is fraudulent.
